Our History

Ganesar College of Arts and Science is situated in the village Melasivapuri which is near to the historical city 6 Parambu – Nadu (Piranmalai) ruled by the lord of the hill country Vallal Vel Pari. It is a remote area, which is a droughtprone one. While struggling to keep their body and soul together, it was impossible for the people to spend money for the education of their children. Realizing the misery of the people of this area, two kind hearted patrons from the family of V. PL. S., came forward to light the light of education. Sanmarga Sabai was registered under the Societies Act XXI of 1860 on 13th May 1909.

V.PL.S. Palaniappa Chettiar and his brother V.PL.S. Annamalai Chettiar founded the Sanmarga Sabai and Ganesar Senthamil Kalloori. It is one of the primordial colleges of Tamil Nadu and now the congregation (Sanmarga Sabai) multiplied and gowned for more than a century with the harbouring support of the brother’s descendants.

Our Milestones

Landmarks in the History of the Institution

1909

(1) Sanmarga Sabai started with Tamil group at the Intermediate Level
(2) Sri Ganesar Senthamil Vidyalaya was also started.

1912-1915

1912 Demise of the founder Vallal V. PL. S. Palaniappa Chettiar.
1915 Madurai Tamil Sangam started the Vidwan Course “Prevesa Pandit” and “Bala Pandit”, and the exams were conducted by Madurai Tamil Sangam.

1918

Resolution for declaring Tamil language as Semmozhi (Classical Language) was adopted at first in our Sanmarga Sabai and it was forwarded to British Government and Indian Universities.The first and foremost voice for Tamil Language as Semmozhi was raised only in our Sanmarga Sabai.

1934

Silver Jubilee – presided over by Dr. U. V. Saminatha Iyer.
(1) In recognition of the honourable veteran scholar Sri. Kathiresan Chettiar who helped to raise Sanmarka Sabai, the Sabai bestowed the title “Pandithamani” on him.
(2) Special Title awarded by Sabai to Shri. R. Ragava Aiyangar as “Mahavithuvan”.
(3) Demise of the founder Vallal V. PL. S. Annamalai Chettiar.

1938

Amalgamated with Madras University and named as Ganesar Sentamizh Kalloori. 1942 A resolution for the compulsion for transforming Vidwan Course into Pulavar Course was passed.

1946

Request was made to Government of Tamil Nadu that pure 8 Tamil words must have to be replaced for the other words used in day-to-day life.

1959

(1) Golden Jubilee – Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Honourable Mr. K. Kamaraj visited and presided over and Ponvizha malar was published by Dr. Raja. Sir. M. A. Muthiah Chettiar, Pro-Chancellor of Annamalai University.
(2) The Portraits of the founders were unveiled. It is noteworthy that Pandithamani’s portrait was also unveiled.
(3) Special Titles awarded by Sabai to Dr. R.P. Sethupillai as “Senthamizhmani”, Dr. T. P. Meenatchi Sundaram as “Perunthamizhmani” and Shri. M. Arunachalam Pillai as “Muthamizhmani”.

1962

PL. Chidambaram Chettiar, Secretary, Sanmarga Sabai and Dr. Semmal V.SP. Manickam as a memorable and notable service made a visit to Malaysia and Saigon to create funds for Sanmarga Sabai.

1966

Honourable Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Bakthavatsalam laid the foundation stone for the college Hostel Nagappa Manavar Illam named after Padmashri A. Nagappa Chettiar who offered patronage for it.

1970

(1) Diamond Jubilee – Dr. M. Varadarasanar (Mu. Va) and Mr. N. T. Sundaravadivelu the then Vice-Chancellors of Chennai University and Top Scholars of Tamil Nadu visited.
(2) Special Title awarded to Dr. V. SP. Manickam as “Semmal” by Sabai.

1976

Pulavar Course modified by the Government of Tamil Nadu as B. Litt. Degree.

1980

Platinum Jubilee – Dr. Semmal. V. SP. Manickam, Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University visited. 

1982

The college has been affiliated under Bharathidasan University

1987

With the effort of Dr. Semmal. V. SP. Manickam, postgraduate M.A. Degree was established. 1991 M. Phil. in Tamil introduced.

1994

(1) Dr. Tamil Semmal. Tamilannal as a memorable and notable service to create lot of funds to Sanmarga Sabai also it is noteworthy, through his efforts, Evening College was established. 
(2) B. Com, B. Com- (Bank Management), B.Sc. Mathematics started as Evening College.

 

1996

B.Sc. Computer Science introduced in the Evening College.

1999

(1) Pearl Jubilee – Former Tamil Nadu Minister Dr. Tamil Kudimagan and Kundrakudi Aadheenam, Thavathiru Ponnambala Adigalar visited.
(2) Through Dr. Tamil Semmal. Tamilannal Computer Lab inaugurated; Nerkkuppai’s Businessman Mr. RAMA. Selvam provided material assistance for Lab.
(3) Special titles awarded to Dr. SP. Annamalai as “Semmal” and Shri. S. Meiyappan as “Senthamilmani” (4) Women’s Hostel was constructed by patronage of C. RM. Ramasamy Chettiar, Mahibalanpatti. 2002 The Palaniappar Annamalayar Arena was constructed by the Sivagangai Member of Parliament Mr. E. M. Sudarsana Nachiappan’s constituency development fund and the arena was inaugurated by him.

2004

With the effort of Dr. Tamil Semmal. Tamilannal, Tamil Department recognized as Research (Ph.D.) Department. 2005 M.Sc. Mathematics started.

2007

(1) Diploma in Yoga begin
(2) The Evening College has been transformed into a full-time, Self- Supporting Institution and Ganesar Senthamizh Kalloori has been changed as Ganesar College of Arts and Science.

2008

(1) Inaugurated 100 years celebration of the college.
(2) The Indian Postal Department released a “Special Envelope” to mark the Century history of the college.

 

2009 - 2011

2009(1) The Century year Jubilee celebrated under the head of Justice AR. Lakshmanan and participated by Arulalar R. M. Veerappan.
(2) Tholkappiyanar Library was renovated.
(3) Completion of the Century celebration.
2011 (1) B.A. English introduced.
(2) Dept. of Library Science and Dept. of Physical Education recognized as Research Department. 10
(3) Unveiling of the statue of the founders by Honourable Justice AR. Lakshmanan

2012-2018

2012 M.Com. started. 2014 M.A. English introduced.
2015 B.Sc. Physics begins.

2018 B.Sw. Social Works started.

2022

 (1) B.Sc. Fashion Technology & Costume Designing started.
(2) Semmal V.SP. Manikkanar Award has been given to the best Headmasters of Pudukkottai and Sivagangai (Dist) by the college.
